Nashville, Tenn. — Our night in Music City had us invading the Anthem nightclub. It went like this:

4:00 a.m.: “Everyone batten down the hatches, we’re taking off! Make sure everything’s secure, because it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!” Markus obnoxiously interrupts our bunk area, while the rest of us are trying to fall asleep.

7:00 a.m.: I get up from my slumber to use one of the bathrooms, and find that the refrigerator has exploded bottles of water and containers of Greek yogurt all over the place. Those water bottles weren’t in there when I went to my bunk… I suspect Markus of improper hatch-battening.

1:00 p.m.: Sheryl Crow is playing the venue tomorrow, so we’re setting up on what will be her stage, which appears to eat up half of the venue’s space!

2:00 p.m.: A local producer comes by the bus, and an impromptu brainstorm flows out of him and Markus. We head out for hot chicken and a little tour up and down Music Row, where I did an internship at Masterfonics mastering studio a few years back.

7:30 p.m.: Everyone is doing sound check and eating their dinner catering, but I’ve decided to run away by myself to visit the strip of honky tonk bars on Broadway. I pop into a karaoke bar in Printer’s Alley, determined to sing while I’m in Music City, but I get terrible stage fright. My heart is pounding, my mouth is dry, and I can’t think of a single song I would want to sing. What is my problem?! Maybe it’s that I’m alone in a karaoke bar in a city where everyone’s a professional musician… I mean, the hostess sounds like she probably has a recording deal.

9:15 p.m.: Markus is working on the Global DJ Broadcast radio show via the bus studio, I’m working on last night’s blog, KhoMha is preparing for his set, and our A&R guy is sifting through promos. Trying, at least, because the bus wi-fi is acting up.

11:00 p.m.: Before going on, The M Machine guys reflect on how thankful they are that the crowds have been willing to take a break of seriousness in between two feel-good trance acts. In the background, Markus talks about how trance can get too serious sometimes, and that he’s trying to put some fun back into it with this rock-n-roll style tour. Just then, a Plexiglas panel from the upstairs VIP wall falls onto the crowd.

2:30 a.m.: As Markus wraps up his performance, The M Machine guys are trying to teach KhoMha how to drink. “Jägermeististro!” they attempt to translate the liquor.

3:20 a.m.: I take a last glance at Anthem, and it looks about the same as it did half a day ago, except that things are moving in reverse…. The M Machine guys are playing Nerfball in the street. Most of the cast and crew are buying hotdogs from a cart outside. All beef? I’m in… even if it sounds like a terrible idea before trying to sleep through another bumpy night on the road.

Onto Missouri and a gig in St. Charles…
