“What happens in Vegas will no longer stay in Vegas…” - Markus Schulz, Jan 2010.

Touching down in new cities is almost as much a part of being a DJ as working the turntables themselves - a fact that’s never been lost on one of the world’s biggest DJs, Markus Schulz. In the last five years alone his always-rolling World Tour has taken him to more of them than many will see in a lifetime. It’s this ever-transforming melting pot of sound, sight and musical taste that fed his desire to capture them musically. And in 2005 that’s what he started to do…

Since then they have shuttled us between some of the most iconic and best known clubbing metropolises in the world; Miami & Ibiza and Amsterdam & Toronto have all had their clubbing credos encapsulated in mix form.

Markus himself explains further: “Many people say that you see great differences moving between countries – that’s natural. I actually think though that you experience some fairly major ones just going from one country’s city to the next. That’s long been a source of fascination to me. The City compilations are a great way for me to document a place through music, by picking out and turning the spotlight on exactly which tracks & sub-styles are working particularly well in specific cities that I’ve played & loved”.

Now at the start of the new decade, for the next instalment of his audio-travelogue, Markus is dedicating the ‘10 edition to a place not only increasingly close to his heart, but one that resonates with hundreds of thousands of clubbers worldwide… Las Vegas.

“Vegas has undergone nothing short of a revolution over the last 4 years; one that’s been driven, as much as anything by the casinos”, says Markus. “I don’t think it’s overstating it to say that it’s becoming - or maybe has already become - a new world clubbing Mecca. From the outside looking in, people previously perceived that Las Vegas has been all bright lights, ‘bling, bling’ & lane upon lane of slots. Through leading nights like Rain at Fabulous and Moon at the Palms (to name just two), that’s changing very fast. For people who are seriously minded about music and clubbing, it’s going to become a place they have to say they’ve been. Hedonism has never been in short supply there – it’s why they call it Sin City! Come this new decade it might very well start to put the squeeze on Ibiza”.

From the first electrostatic sizzle of the opening seconds of Clinch’s elegy to Rain, ‘Las Vegas ’10’, clips the city under the microscope and begins its DNA decode. Interwoven in its genes is the deep, house-ish overture of Dakota’s ‘Sin City’ (its title self-explanatory); the skittering electro squall of Arnej’s ‘They Need Us’, the super-fluid melodica of Rex Mundi’s ‘Opera of Northern Ocean’ and the attacking, rapacious bass of Phynn’s remix of Mike Foyle’s ‘Deadly Nightshade’. Each track that comes to ‘Las Vegas’10’ discs has either been successfully test-fired by Markus in L.V. or comes with the awareness of a man who knows exactly what will find the centre of the dancefloor there.

I'm a little disappointed because of two reasons...

1.

14. Anton Firtich featuring Victoria Mazze - Meant to be Free (Original Mix)

The Cramp Remix is so much better and so much more Coldharbourish!

2. I don't see any special tracks from Markus himself...whether it be a new one from his upcoming artist album or just a remix :(

Still looks amazing...but I am pretty bummed there are no new Markus tracks :(

Great News :D

I still play Toronto 09 most days over the Car Stereo, come to think of it Toronto was probably the definitive album of 2009 for me.

Big ups for Markus putting Comet in there:D

I always think an artist's compilation CD should have songs from the artists. Call me crazy for thinking that...

I can't really count Sin City since it was on Toronto'09...and Chinook has been played so much. So it seems like Markus doesn't have any of his own works on this compilation, which goes against what a compilation is in my opinion.

Yeah Rick

This looks really good. I can't wait to order a copy of it and add it to my collection. It likes like there is a large amount of songs on each cd, more than the Toronto one. Really good stuff.

a lot of unknown tracks for me! looking forward to hear them :D and of no markus tracks, i dont really care, he spoils us with 2 artist albums in 1 year (dakota and the new upcoming album) so that's a great effort by him ;) love comet and opera of northern ocean to be on this album!

I couldn't disagree more with all the complaints about a lack of Markus tracks. One of the main purposes of his compilations is to put the spotlight on underground talent. Artists like Rex Mundi, Mr Pit and Arnej need a platform in which to be recognised and the markus compilations are it. So many mixtapes / compilations are just thrown together these days, where as a markus compilation, like his live sets, takes you on a journey. He also has an incredible knack of capturing the city highlighted, I still remember sitting in Amsterdam on a cold miserable day in November and listening to disc one of that compilation and totally understanding the whole vibe. That was the moment I became a huge fan of markus. I was blown away by how much effort had gone into selecting the tracks that would capture that feeling. If any of you are heading to Vegas this year, unfortunately I'm not, whilst there take some time out to listen to his compilation and you will really gain an understanding of how good markus schulz city compilations really are!

agreed with you because i Dont think there is any spesific reason the complilation to have a new track or not no reason to spoiled this plus we already have this year dakota album and we should be happy that beside the artist album we will have Vegas as well so ;)

I am really excited and cerious to see how the artist album under the alias of Markus Schulz name will be ;)

A compilation is suppose to show case the artists' style...the biggest way of doing that is by remixing the tracks or adding your own tracks.

Every other DJ has done it this way...and up until this album, Markus has done it himself (save Armada at Ibiza).

Well, one of the objectives of a compilation is easy as that. Selected tracks from another producers/DJ's and mixed or edited by the main artist (in this case Markus). But, as you say, its very good to hear some tracks of markus on it, it gives his touch to the cd's and we can hear new upcoming production.

I can't wait for this one too! and im so glad that sir markus always keeps his dark proggy and techy trance line on all of his previous cd's :o :D 8-)

I've listened to whole compilation and it's amazing. IMO worse than Toronto but still AWESOME ;) Few words about few tracks :D :
CD1
02. Torin Schmitt feat. Ryan Merchant - Follow - Nice baackground melody, and nice male vocal.
03. ElSandro - Style Fusion (Jessus Progressivo Mix) - Recently often played by Markus, and I must say that Jessus is God :D
06. Mike Foyle - Blossom - Melodic and calm tune.
Superb mix right there ;)
07. Veselin Tasev - Pacific Waves (Evgeny Bardyuzha Remix)
11. Phynn pres. Binary Star - The Halo Effect - Similiar to Deadly Nightshade remix 14. Anton Firtich feat. Victoria Mazze - Meant To Be Free - Vocal Tune no 1 of the compilation ;)

CD2
04. Re-Ward vs. Dr Willis - Maaybe (tyDis Stadium Mix) - also GDJb Tune ;) Very bangin
07. Max Graham feat. Neev Kennedy - Sun In The Winter - Can't wait to here remixes ;)
10. Mr. Pit - This Room Is Not Big Enough - Dancefloor killer, just watch people reaction on YouTube.
14. Beat Service meets Tucandeo feat. Manon Polare - Waiting For The Sun the perfect way to finish compilation ;)

Listened a few times between yesterday and today.

Taking a little while to warm to Disc 1. Love the intro into Follow, but the flow really gets into gear from Opera of Nothern Ocean onwards. Disc 2 is massive, starting out with Comet and continually building the momentum throughout.

I think the really cool thing about this compilation compared to the last couple is that it is more energetic and geared towards the big room experiences that Las Vegas brings. And that's the beauty of all of the CDs in Markus' compilation series - all of them have a different vibe and they generate different moods when you listen to them.

Not only that, look at the calibre of tunes that we are going to be looking back on for years to come, and define them as bonafide hits:

Opera of Northern Ocean
Comet
They Need Us
Sun in the Winter
Deadly Nightshade
Waiting for the Sun

Then there are all the tunes which for me personally are growing day by day, like On Hold, Meant to be Free and Blossom which I'll end up going crazy about in time.

These are all tracks Markus took from scratch and built them up into hits, and their appearance on this compilation just solidifies that.

Disc 1 is a grower, and Disc 2 is a winner. Big thumbs up overall from me. :)

Nice compilation as usual, i prefer disc 2 and especially the part from track 4 to 10.

But imo the best track is still Rex Mundi - Opera Of Northern Ocean ^^!

Love both discs. Really nice opening to disc 1 before building into some lovely tunes. Absolutely adore Opera of Northern Ocean & Blossom.

Disc 2 is far more peaktime, with some absolutely banging tracks in there. This Room Is Not Big Enough is an absolute weapon! Can't stand the vocal on You though. Great tune, but that girl cannot sing!

These city compilations have rapidly become the mix cd's i look forward to most, they just never disappoint!

2) Afterhours mix of Chinook is the weirdest track on the compilation - can anybody hear at least some resemblance between original mix and AH?))

OMg  When I listen to Exclusive Preview: Karanda feat. David Call - On Hold first time the male voice not impressed me... but now...
I can't stop listening to 'On Hold' aggressive loop...acceleration...small injection of energy :)

I am grateful that his compilations are devoid of "well-known and popular" and full of "interesting and talented." Amen!!! :D

It is. I have the cd here and it says: Written and produced by Markus Schulz.

And another one: ElSando - Style fusion is not just produced by Sander Bouma but co-produced by Ward vd Harst & Willem van Hanegem (aka W&W) and good ole Cor Fijneman. How's that for a surprise?!

Listened to the cd a couple of times now and must say that I prefer CD 1, really nice tracks here starting nice and slow and building it to an bangin' end.

Love the Halo Effect by Phynn and On Hold, really nice vocal tracks that gives my goosebumps. Somehow Meant to be Free reminds me of an old track by Tiësto or is that just me?

no one's gonna really like what I have to say, but I am extremely disappointed with this compilation. There are only a handful of good tracks IMHO and the mix is all over the place. Sounds like Markus just threw this together effortlessly.

After making one of the best compilations I've ever heard (Toronto '09) and previous others. This one doesn't even sound like Markus' style at all. After a while I totally forgot what I was listening to. Seriously guys, what the hell is going on??? I know I can't be the only one that feels this way.

I remember why I became such a huge fan of the guy with amazing mixes and productions. But now, its just discouraging and I don't even care to tune in on Thursdays anymore. Seems like this is all going toward a downward spiral.

I'm sorry if I upset/offended anyone, but I'm saying all of this because I care.

cheers.

nobody can dislike you for having an opinion that differs from theirs. i personally like pretty much everything markus does musically but it's a matter of opinion. perhaps you are drifting away from his sound which although unfortunate it's not uncommon for people to drift to different sounds or not go in the same direction as their favored djs. i don't think it's because markus has gone downhil...there are ton of djs i used to love but don't put any energy to listening to now but that's because of my preference.

To be the honest, I've expected more from Las Vegas 10.

You (club mix) is pretty boring + Chinook as well. Why are they on this compilation? :?

I miss some great tunes for ex.:

International language by Element One,
some Estiva tracks,
Anton Chernikov pres Crystal Verge - Invasion
Calvin Harris - Flashback (Eric Prydz Remix)
Dyor feat. David Gionfriddo - Don't Let Me Down (Trance Dub Mix)
Benya - Europe (original)

Anyway it's okay, great compilation! (But not the best coldharbourish mixalbum  )

Waiting for the sun ftw! 8-)

@aakos and @stev.

I share the same thoughts. Las Vegas '10 did not meet the very high bars set by Toronto '09. For the last couple of years, I've been increasingly hooked to the Markus compilations - Miami was great, Amsterdam was ever better and Toronto totally floored me.

As someone pointed out, what this compilation really lacks is the Markus Schulz personal touch. His own remixes and productions were what set apart the previous compilations.

Instead, what this compilation is full of - overplayed GDJB tracks. I counted - over half the tracks in CD2 were released before this album came out, and some tracks, like Comet & esp "You" were so overplayed that it just stole some charm off this album. They're great tracks, esp comet is fabulous, but they simply didn't rework the magic of Markus Schulz.

Ofcourse, there were many golden moments - CD1's first 20 mins were amazing, and I loved StyleFusion. Opera of Northern Ocean is pure bliss. If I weren't a regular GDJB listener, I'd probably find the mix a lot more engaging.

I guess Markus was too occupied with his artist album to do any justice to this year's compilation. It sounds better than the GDJB World Tour CD (which sounded as if it were slapped together purely for commercial purposes and that is always a downhill path - filled with brilliant tracks, but mixed in a way that totally loses the energy from his livesets), but not by much. Markus is my absolute favorite DJ & producer, and I sincerely hope that he doesn't go down the path of quantity over quality.

i have listen to it more than a million times and still dont know which cd is my favourite one cd one or two!

cd one is quite amazing and totally wicked even that i was a bit dissapointed with the version of opera there is - not sure if it is the album version or maybe markus dropped the bpm still its way much more different from the version i heard in global few weeks before the release of the album (I know it sounds boring and you all get tired from me keep saying this but still)

cd two is very nice as well at least to my ears!as i regular listen of global the last months i actually like listening all the tracks i have heard and going to heard in the show and I guess It is just me who thought that cd two wasnt boring at all!Just because you heard already those tracks doesnt mean its bad to listen again! In fact the mix of cd two and the selection of tracks from Markus is just amazing!!

tip : If you are a regular listener of the show you might thought this is something you already heard BUT if you are not a regular listener this is a good chance (the cd two i mean plus cd one)to introduced you in Markus style

I dont know why we have to compare it with previous complilations this is something new and something different which doesnt mean its bad at the first place anyway!
