We're only halfway through 2009, yet it already looks like this will be the year of Dakota. During his sabbatical in London at the turn of the millennium, Markus Schulz conceived this alter ego for certain productions - a darker, more progressive side of him which has been the foundation for the hallmarked Coldharbour sound. Dakota coming from the name of the street he lived on in Arizona in the 90's.

It's been seven years since Markus Schulz first let the darker, deeper and more moody side of him come to the forefront. Not that he needed it to elevate the position he enjoys today. Over the years he has grown to be one of the world's most popular DJ's and producers. Founding the Coldharbour and Coldharbour Red labels, running a weekly radioshow that is now listened to by 10 million fans around the world, releasing 2 massive artist albums, winning several awards, including one for 'Best American DJ' in 2009, and ending up in the 8th position of the DJ Mag Top 100 listing, is only just a brief summary of what he's been up to. In the meantime, the Dakota alias has been biding its time. That time is now. Seven years after his last release, Dakota returns with a full artist album. Markus:"I just have been busy doing music under my own name, and when I started on this project, I just wanted to make some deeper more dark tunes for my DJ sets this summer. When I was finished, I realized that this was much darker and deeper than my usual artist album and I did not want my fans to get confused and think I was changing my style, so I thought that putting this out under the old Dakota name I used in the early millennium was a better idea. "

With 'Thoughts Become Things', Markus Schulz brings us an album on which he allows the Dakota identity to take over completely. Markus: " The album name was inspired from the Rhonda Byrne book called 'The Secret'. The main mantra throughout the book is that thoughts become things. It really is a fascinating self motivation book that I read all the time. I had a lot of ideas and thoughts after my gigs, while on an airplane and even while I was performing on stage. When I took the ideas into the studio they really came to life and turned into the things that they now are." With a flawless, characteristic sound that varies from minimalistic trance, to progressive techno and deep house, 'Thoughts Become Things' turns thoughts into motion. Dakota is back in full effect.

A little disappointed there's only 10 songs :( I was hoping for a couple more. Guess that means each song will be a full, extended version though.

+1 jimaeus

Seems like we'll get a "short" album... It would have been great if it releases in a 2disc edition, the second would be the Remixed, because there have been lots of remixes in his sets recently... but nevermind... Dakota is back! :) and this is the most important :D

To clear up some of the questions.

The album running time is around 77 minutes, so that confirms that each track is in its full version (and DJ friendly too).

Lima is the same as Day Off in Lima without a horn.

I am hoping like many of you that Amsterdam and Progression will see a release somewhere. Then again, I have been hoping for the release of an old Dakota track called Abandoned in Queens for over 6 years now! But I am sure if there is enough demand for it, then the tracks will come out.

Don't forget that nearly every track from the album will be released as a single with remixes before the end of the year. Chinook was the first, and Johnny The Fox will be out on Beatport this Monday (the 15th).

This week's Global DJ Broadcast is a Thoughts Become Things Release Special, where Markus will showcase the tracks that feature on the album, and including an exclusive remix of one of the tracks.

Should be a good one, can't wait. :)

Chinook to open, well talk about diving right in there! I've said it a few times I love the original more than the remixes and it's the original on here so no need to say it again.

Johnny the Fox - A bouncy tune, but I do prefer the driving bass of the Barnes & Heatcliff remix myself :o

Sin City - I've not heard the CG remix, but I've heard this one live numerous times, it's a biiiig tune, one I can't wait to own ;)

The Doorway - Not my favourite tune I have to admit, it fit in the em but I've listened to it on it's own (via skipping right to the song) and I can't quite put my finger on why I don't feel buzzed when I hear it. Maybe it's toooooo epic a break, who knows? I mean I like it, but not as much as say the next track...

KOOLHAUS! - Fell in love with this song since I heard it first way back in February. Heard it twice in 24 hours, it blew me away. Still quite possibly my favourite track on the album but I dunno how a remixer is going to top the original!

Steel Libido - It's hard to base my opinion on the 1:30 sample, but the break is great, the tune equally good, I'm looking forward to hearing this in full!

Lima - It's a pity that the Lima sample doesn't have the modified horn, I really want to compare it to the December '08 Essential Mix - I'm pretty curious as to where the original sample came from that it couldn't get cleared  The tune gives me the chills and is right up there with (if not ahead of) Koolhaus as probably my favourite...beautiful!

Roxy84 - The bassline after the break sounds very much like a CG bassline, I'm expecting The Verracocha Remix or something to just pop out at me :P Looking forward to hearing this track!

Re-Swirl - This track sounds fantastic! Lovely bassline, nothing takes over any other element in any serious way, just another tune I can't wait to hear!

Mr. Cappuccino - Definitely liking the groovy nature of the track, belongs in the opening stages of a set for sure.

So there we have it, come on Monday!

Loving this so far, Re-Swirl is pounding away in the background as i type! As a huge Sasha & Digweed fanboy back in the day, i loved the original & this freshening up of it is brilliant.

Aside from Re-Swirl, standout tracks for me have been Roxy 84, Johnny The Fox & the utterly awesome Koolhaus, but frankly there's not a bad track in there.

Seems we're on the same page Sam, posted on the other thread about Lima being way different to Day Off in Lima, not for the better either. Day Off in Lima FTW!!!!

Diggin the new album but to be honest I am a bit disappointed... Markus made some great tracks, but I was expecting more of the dark stuff that the Dakota moniker "proclaims"... 'A Day Off In Lima' is my favorite Dakota track but like most of you i was shunned to NOT hear the horns go off... I was completely baffled but not just because of that, but because it's showing the trend that Markus is going off into... I'm sure some if you know what I'm talking about (at least I hope)... and if not, then listen to some of the sets played early 08 and 07, and compare it to now... cheers! :|

This looks great, I can't wait to add it to my collection.

Does anybody know if this has been released on CD yet? and possibly where can I find it? (in the states)
